Hi, what can i grow under 2 large Yew trees?

The trees are mature and have preservation orders on them. They are both on a north facing wall with flower borders underneath. The soil is very dry and also recieves very little light. What ever, we plant under seems to grow very slowly and looks weak and lank. Does anyone have any ideas.

Thanks

Hi, what can i grow under 2 large Yew trees?
I have a garden under some pine trees which presents a similar situation in terms of light and moisture exposure. I've had success with hostas (the nearly universal shade solution) and lamiums, and pachysandra. I pepper in annuals such as impatiens and begonias for color. Just be sure to fertilize (I use 12-12-12) and also make sure its watered. I takes a strong downpour to reach certain sections of my bed. Good luck!
Reply:Very little, get rid of them, they have a huge root system and will take up water and nutrients for yards around.
Reply:S′true. They take all the water and nutrition away from other plants. Since we dug out our yew tree, our magnolia had whacks of flowers this spring, and we now have a rhododendron in place of the yew.
Reply:A nice bistro table with chairs and 2 big pots with nice plants and flowers in them. If you plant stuff in the gorund it will probably die as the trees will take most of the water and sunlight.
Reply:best to put flowers in tubs under the tree, nothing will grow truely under the tree as the roots take all the moisture away,
Reply:Ferns
Reply:lavender... the best plant ever!
