To be happy where you are? or to never be satisfied and constantly work to improve?

Outlook #1 states- be happy where you are, grow where you're planted, come as you are, be HUMBLE. Look at those people chasing dreams and laugh because they are not at peace with themselves.

Outlook #2 states- To be happy and fulfilled, we must always improve ourselves, we must become better, we must not accept things as they are in order to make things better.

With outlook #1, you will feel like an under-achiever, probably want more from life, THEN feel shame for your "greedy desires".

With outlook #2, you will constantly be changing, never stopping to smell the flowers, never accepting life seeing the way things are as inferior to the way you want them to be.

Both of these outlooks are prescribed for those seeking happiness, however, they contradict each other. Which outlook is "correct"?

To be happy where you are? or to never be satisfied and constantly work to improve?
There is no right or wrong some people are stuck and dont care some people do. Some people want more and never get it, some people want more get it and still will never be satisfied no matter how much they get.
Reply:Neither is corect. Everyone is different and finds happiness in different places. Just because one cannot understand anotheres reasoning does not mean that it is wrong.

However that brings me to my second point. outlook #2 does not state that we would not be happy where we are, or unhappy. In fact it states the opposite, it states to be happy you must improve yourself. It just states we would always be on the go and looking and learning.

Your brain can always learn new things. I see nothing wrong with learning and expanding your knoweldge, and the best way to do this is to go places and do things.

What is worng with learning and exploring?

Personally I don't think you would be whole or wise until you have done both and then found out what was best for you.
Reply:I like "be happy where you are" if the conditions are right. if you have a good family, a job you like, nice neighbors, yes, it is the best.

The second outlook is important for people wanting to improve their conditions. Sometimes, a vacation from Outlook #1 can improve anyone, and this group is happy to go home. Outlook #2 seems to want to change their entire lives or to explore until they find a place closer to their ideal outlook, and be among people with similar interests.

Some people are workaholics, and to the end of their lives, they go through wives, children, families, homes, etc. always working. They are people stuck in their own adolescence in some way. They can be nice.
Reply:Take the middle road.
Reply:There's nothing greedy about being happy where you are, coming as you are or being humble. You can't grow where you're planted without improvement or action of some kind. The correct outlook is a personal option. For me, time is change. With each moment what you do with yourself is your future. If you decide not to do something there's nothing incorrect about it. If you decide to do whatever it is, then okay. Good deal. It's not correct to lump things into these two outlooks because we're a diverse people.
Reply:Extremes are seldom good for happiness.

But the right balance varies from person to person depending on his natural predisposition.

There is no "golden rule", but a healthy variety.
Reply:Be genuinely grateful for what you have, and focus passionately on what you would like to have.
Reply:A combination of both. You should always be happy with yourself and where you are at in life. Then you can have goals to achieve, and when you do, you will have improved your life and again you should be happy at that place in your life. If you set new goals, you should never not like where you are at the time. It is that place that has allowed you to better yourself or your life. Without now, how can you achieve the future?!
Reply:Both are correct. You must always strive to be happy with situations that you cannot control. You must also strive to improve your situation, whenever possible. If you feel like you want something, then by all means go out and get it, especially if you think it will make you happier. If you have no desire to go any farther, then by all means stop and be happy. Don't be unhappy with situations that you cannot affect, however. Noone should ever feel unhappy because they are not tall enough to play in the NBA, because that is something that they cannot change. If that person really feels that to be happy they must play in the NBA, then that person needs to realize that the only way that will happen is if they practice enough and become good enough to do so. They should also realize that there is a chance that they will never ever get there, and they should be happy with their attempt, not with the results. If the attempt was a good faith attempt that could have produced results, then they should be happy, because they did everything they could to achieve their goal, they just didn't get there, because that is life. They should be happy that they put in such a good effort and really commited to something and saw it out for better or worse. So the answer is to have a good mixture of both outlooks. Basically, make yourself happy, however, you need to. If you want more, get it, if you need a break, take it.
